The Colorado Sports Hall of Fame was formally incorporated on November 4, 1964, and inducted its first class in April of 1965, which included Earl "Dutch Clark", Jack Dempsey, and Byron "Whizzer" White. In 2001, the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Museum opened at INVESCO Field at Mile High. Inductees are memorialized on Legacy Pillars, each honoring a different class, along the south side of the stadium, at the tree-lined, pedestrian Sports Legends Mall.
The Class of 2001 includes Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Don Carlsen, Colorado A&M football coach Bob Davis, jockey Pat Day, Denver Broncos linebacker Karl Mecklenburg, Regis University basketball coach Lonnie Porter and gold medal Olympic swimmer Amy Van Dyken.
